The US has reached its lowest point in the Top500 rankings for the first time since it began 25 years ago.This is also the first time that China was able to produce a huge number of supercomputers which is attributed to the high economic performance of the Asian country.
A decade ago, most of the world’s fastest supercomputers can all be found in the US.By 2010, a Chinese supercomputer ended up in the No.1 spot.Since 2013, China has persistently held on to the number one title, thanks to the creation of the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer that can be found in the city of Wuxi.
Michael Kan from PCmag.com stated that the processing power of the Sunway TaihuLight can reach 93 petaflops, which is the equivalent of a quadrillion calculations per second.It’s twice the power of the second fastest supercomputer called Tianhe-2, which was developed by a team of 1,300 computer engineers and scientists in China.
Titan, the fastest supercomputer in the US, can be found at No. 5 on the list with a computing speed of 17.5 petaflops.The US had 231 supercomputers on the Top500 list three years ago.Tech analysts are worried that the country is lagging in its technological progress when rivals like China are making great strides in supercomputing technology.
