[아시아뉴스통신=페이 기자] The top education official in Central Visayas on Tuesday expressed confidence that strong collaboration among the government, school officials and the community will address sustainability in rolling out the alternative learning delivery modalities for the school year 2020 to 2021. Dr. Salustiano Jimenez, Department of Education (DepEd)-7 regional director, in an interview, said stakeholders in the education sector have seen “no glitches” in implementing the Self-Learning Modules (LSMs) as they kicked off the national school readiness program last week.
Jimenez said the simultaneous dry run on the alternative learning delivery modalities in Central Visayas went smoothly last Aug. 18, with 19 school divisions and other stakeholders participating in testing the new normal in teaching strategy.
He pushed for a strong partnership between the parents and the local government units, particularly the barangays, in assisting teachers in delivering the modules from the households as well as the retrieval work and sending them back to the teachers for checking and recording. He added that even non-government organizations will be a big help in making this strategy work especially in the far-flung areas where connectivity is a continuing issue.
“It’s consistency and sustainability that we see as a big challenge in implementing the new modalities. For example, the delivery and retrieval of the materials during heavy rains. We need the strong partnership of the community in this aspect,” Jimenez told the Philippine News Agency.
The DepEd-7 registered at least 1.8 million elementary pupils and high school students who have enrolled for this school year, which is 96.5 percent of last year's enrollment. However, Jimenez said they are still confident that the 3.5 percent who have not yet enrolled due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis will still enlist for the new modalities, as the class opening is postponed to October 5.

Jimenez, however, said the figures may still increase this week as only 165 of the 1,005 private schools have started their classes on Monday.
